One in four women suffers from heavy prolonged menstrual bleeding that is caused by AUB – Abnormal Uterine Bleeding. Common symptoms include:

Soaking through at least one pad or tampon every hour for several hours.

Heavy periods that last more than five to seven days

Passing large clots.

Fatigue related to anemia.

Excessive menstrual bleeding can be physically and emotionally draining, causing anemia, and limiting your activities. Many women are reluctant to have a major operation that may affect their hormone levels. But alternatives like birth control pills and IUD’s are not appealing to them either.

The Her Option  endometrial ablation is the modern solution to abnormal uterine bleeding. Major surgery is no longer necessary for most women suffering with heavy prolonged menstrual bleeding. Her Option is a 20 minute office procedure, and it is the safest and least painful method of ablation available.

There is no incision needed, the cervix is gently dilated to allow a 5 mm probe to enter the uterus. The probe is then super-cooled under ultrasound guidance. This is similar to the cryosurgery we have been doing for years for abnormal pap smears. The cramping associated with the dilation subsides as the uterus is cooled, and most patients experience only mild discomfort during the procedure. We do 2-3 cycles of freezing, each lasting about 6 minutes to treat the entire uterine cavity.

Following the procedure, a bloody watery discharge lasts for 2-3 weeks. Mild cramping is treated with analgesics. You may return to work the day after the procedure. The first period you have after an ablation consists of old uterine lining. Menstrual periods after the Her Option procedure are usually much lighter, shorter, and milder, and some patients to not have bleeding at all.

Preparation for the procedure consists of a pap smear and pelvic examination, usually a pelvic ultrasound, and always an endometrial biopsy to confirm that you do not have a malignancy causing your abnormal uterine bleeding.

If you or your partner have not had a vasectomy or tubal ligation, you will be counseled regarding effective birth control. The ablation does not prevent you from becoming pregnant, and any pregnancy that does occur after an ablation is a serious emergency, life threatening to both mother and child. If you are unsure if you would like to have another child, you should not have an endometrial ablation.

In a clinical study it was found that 94% of Her Option Cryoablation treatments were successful. Patients having this procedure often report a decrease in PMS symptoms, such as fatigue, irritability, and cramping. Her Option does not change your desire for or enjoyment of sexual activity, and does not cause premature ovarian failure.

Take control of your periods. You do not have to “Just live with” the limitations and discomforts of excessive menstrual bleeding. Her Option endometrial ablation offers you the chance to enjoy the healthy active lifestyle you deserve.
